Save the Date: 2011 Leadership Award Event

Any successful transformation requires champions who are willing to undertake the risks and sacrifices necessary to catalyze the change. This is especially true in health care. To encourage and sustain leadership in the field of integrative medicine, The Bravewell Collaborative created the Bravewell Leadership Award.

On Thursday evening, November 10, 2011, Bravewell, with Mehmet Oz, MD as Master of Ceremonies, will honor the third recipient of this award at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. An educational Lectures & Luncheon event moderated by Jonathan LaPook, MD will be held during the day at the New York Palace.

“In addition to honoring the award recipient, Bravewell’s Leadership Events are noted for being a gathering of friends,” said Bravewell Board Member Sherry Lund. “The evening will be filled with engaging conversation and the warmth of true camaraderie.”

Cost-Effectiveness of Integrative Medicine

A new report from The Bravewell Collaborative, The Efficacy and Cost-Effectiveness of Integrative Medicine, summarizes the information supporting an integrative approach to health care from three sources – medical research conducted at universities, studies carried out by corporations developing employee wellness programs, and pilot projects run by insurance companies.

A few of the report’s pertinent facts:

  • A demonstration project involving eight hospitals determined that 80% of the participants in the comprehensive lifestyle change program were able to safely avoid heart surgery or angioplasty, saving almost $30,000 per patient in the first year.

  • A review of the health/wellness management programs offered by employers showed that in 2005 the corporations involved experienced an average 26% reduction in health care costs and an average $5.81 returned for every $1 invested in worksite health promotion initiatives.

Integrative Medicine Report

To better inform the transformation of health care, The Bravewell Collaborative recently released Integrative Medicine: Improving Health Care for Patients and Health Care Delivery for Providers and Payors.

This 50-page briefing explains what integrative medicine is and how it can help resolve many of the problems inherent in our current system. In summarizing the evidence presented at the Institute of Medicine's Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public, the report discusses the true value of care that addresses the whole person. It explains how and why our lifestyles affect our health, the importance of the doctor- patient relationship and the need to embrace complexity and connection in both care and research.

“Bravewell is very pleased to offer this report on integrative medicine,” said Christy Mack, Co-Founder and President of The Bravewell Collaborative. “We believe it will help others to understand the importance of integrative medicine and the potential it holds for improving the health of the American people.”

Ruth Westreich

Bravewell Member Profile: Ruth Westreich

Trained as an artist and designer, Ruth Westreich’s love for philanthropy began some forty years ago when she was given a life-altering gift by a humanitarian who requested that he not receive pay back, but that she pay it forward instead. Since that day, paying it forward has become part of her cellular makeup.

Her commitment to health is unwavering and the Westreich Foundation generously supports integrative medicine and palliative medicine both locally in San Diego and nationally. She joined The Bravewell Collaborative in 2008.

"Being part of The Bravewell Collaborative has proven to me that a group of committed philanthropists can leave their personal agendas behind and come together around a focused cause. It is a model of which we can be very proud."

Ruth calls herself a connector — connecting people to people and people to causes — and is the visionary responsible for the creation of the award-winning book, The Art of Original Thinking: The Making of a Thought Leader written by Jan Phillips.
